It is the most common physical format for color thermal receipt printing, tailored to fit standard thermal printer roll holders.
Unlike flat-sheet color thermal paper, this product is manufactured as a continuous roll, optimized for the automated feeding and cutting mechanisms of thermal printers. Its structure has three key layers, from base to surface:
- Base Layer: A thin, durable paper substrate (typically 40–60 g/m²) that provides tensile strength. It prevents tearing during printer feeding and ensures the roll maintains its cylindrical shape.
- Pre-Coat Layer: A buffer layer between the base and thermal coating. It blocks moisture from the base paper and improves adhesion for the thermal layer, preventing coating peeling.
- Thermal Color-Coat Layer: The functional core. It contains colorless leuco dyes (calibrated to react into the target color), acidic developers, and sensitizers. These components react under heat to form stable, visible colors in printed areas.
The Working Principle of color thermal paper roll
While its color-forming chemistry matches flat-sheet color thermal paper, the roll format enables a continuous, automated printing workflow:
● Roll Mounting
The roll is loaded onto the printer's spindle, with the paper end threaded through the printer's paper path.
● Heat Activation
When a print command is sent, the printer's thermal head (a grid of micro-heating elements) applies localized heat (80–150°C) to the paper's surface as the roll feeds forward.
● Color Formation
Heated areas trigger a chemical reaction in the thermal layer, converting leuco dyes into the target color (e.g., black text on a yellow background). Unheated areas remain the roll's base color.
● Cutting
After printing, the printer's built-in cutter (manual or automatic) trims the paper to the required length, producing a single receipt-while the remaining roll stays mounted for the next print job.
